Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Issue Resolved? - Cowboy tunes or Cowboy songs?

The other day, a highly esteemed average Joe said on here, "Your a real DeadHead if you really like the Cowboy Tunes!"

What if he said, "Your a real DeadHead if you really like the Cowboy Songs!"?

I would have said there's a sweet song I taped that goes by that name, Cowboy Song. It's an original, by John Jump. It was performed by Lazy River in 1976. I'd be honored to share this with you.

I posted about my lost Video Tapes of Bluegrass Alliance band, at my TV station, in 1976. I mentioned I gave my 2 weeks notice at the TV station to go work full-time with a new band. That new band was Lazy River, in Louisville. Several of these artists are featured on my lost video tapes. They were quitting Bluegrass Alliance in August or September. They were dumping Lonnie Peerce, who had sole rights to this famous band's name. Sam Bush and his cohorts in the Bluegrass Alliance did the same thing to Lonnie Peerce, in 1971 or 1972. They formed the legendary band, Newgrass Revival.

Cowboy Song - MP3
written and sung by John Jump
performed by Lazy River band
John Jump - electric guitar
Vince Gill - tenor vocals, violin
Bob Briedenbach - pedal steel guitar
Bill Millet - baritone vocals, rhythm guitar
John Beaser - electric bass

Lazy River encore:
Up That Lazy River - by The Mills Brothers - MP3
performed by Lazy River band
Vince Gill - lead and tenor vocals, electric mandolin
John Jump - vocals, electric guitar
Bob Briedenbach - pedal steel guitar
Bill Millet - baritone vocals, banjo
John Beaser - electric bass
Monte Barry - soundman, hippie taper

When the Lazy River band first formed up, Robert Pool quit his bassist job. He moved back to Austin. The band was putting together their promo kit. They made another appointment with their photographer to get their new bassist in their photo spread. The new bassist was still in St. Louis. They almost forced me to pose with them, even though I'm just the soundman. We fought about it for awhile. Then I smoked a bowl of dope and ran off to my girlfriend's place. That left them no choice but to use their original photo. John Beaser plays bass on my tape, but Robert Pool is shown in their mugs-shot.

Up That Lazy River is the band's theme song. The band's name came from this famous old swing tune. Vince Gill and John Jump shared the frontman role. These were the last notes that Vince and John played together, in Birmingham, Alabama. Vince Gill joined Byron Berline's band, Sundance. John Jump moved back to St. Louis at the same time.
